Lisa M. Hopkins, LMT Part Time Class (graduated Aug 2012)
I started my journey at Carlson College of Massage Therapy in the fall of 2011 as a part time student. I was determined to go back to college before I turned forty; which was creeping up fast. That winter I started to research and really think about what I wanted out of a new career. I knew I needed a career that gave me the opportunity to interact with others and help them feel better about themselves. Massage Therapy sounded like the perfect choice. I reviewed other schools, but found Carlson College had the most to offer. The part time program allowed me to be with my family and stay employed full time. It was also a great way to get back into a good study routine with the program being spread out over eleven months. Fast forward to August 2012 and I am now a recent graduate of Carlson College of Massage Therapy. I was blessed with wonderful instructors and classmates. Going to school seemed more like getting together with family. I am impressed with the teaching style they provide at Carlson and how they incorporate everyday life lessons into our time learning. Thanks to the instructors at Carlson College I now have the confidence and knowledge to become a successful massage therapist.
Jessica Otter, BS, LMT Part Time Class (graduated Aug 2012)
My first trip to Carlson College of Massage Therapy was in 1996 when I was a junior in high school. I fell in love with the school and the idea of being a massage therapist, but my love for the outdoors took me on a different path. After earning a BS in Plant Biology, I worked for 7 years at an organic herb and spice company. In 2011, I was ready for a change. I wanted to do something with a more direct link to the fruits of my labor. And I didn’t want to sit at a desk anymore. On a kayaking trip down the Wapsi with good friends I had an epiphany. We were just passing the historic General Store in Stone City when I remembered my trip to Carlson as a teenager. I had located my north star. I visited their website that night and found out their next part time class was beginning in 2 weeks. I scheduled an appointment, signed all of the paperwork on the spot and the rest is history. I did a little bit of comparison shopping with other programs in the area, but Carlson was the only school that offered the program I was looking for. I knew from my background in science, that I would need a program that could teach me more than the hands on stuff. I wanted to how the body functioned, what techniques to apply in specific situations, and why those techniques are effective. The education I received at Carlson gave me the foundation I needed to answer those questions. I wasn’t simply given the answers; I was given the tools I to answer the questions. An invaluable education. I will forever hold dear my time at Carlson, the instructors who taught me, and the classmates that were part of my journey.

Brianne Goetzinger, LMT Full Time Class (graduated Feb 2002)When massage therapy was suggested to me, I didn’t know what to think. I’d never had a massage before. I wasn’t the type to come up behind a friend and rub their shoulders like some people do. I assumed that constant urge to give someone a massage was a prerequisite to a career in massage therapy. I was wrong! It felt like “home” the first visit I had with the school. Fast forward one year — I was fresh out of high school and engaged. As I started school at Carlson, I was happy that in six months I’d be moving home, starting my career, and preparing for our wedding. 2002 was a big year for us! I graduated from Carlson in February, built a house in June, and married in December! I started my own massage therapy practice in a chiropractic clinic in Grinnell. I was an Independent Contractor and able to build my practice up to the point that I had a wait list of 3-months long. I couldn’t have been more blessed with my business. In 2007, I announced I would be closing the doors to my practice to become a stay-at-home mom (our first baby was due in December). My clients thought I was crazy to walk away from the amazing business I had, but I knew with a career and passion in massage therapy, I’d be able to pick it back up when I was ready. In 2009, I started working one day a week from a home office. In 2010, I added another day to my schedule. Now, my daughter is 5-years old and in preschool three days a week. I was able to add a few more clients to my schedule while she’s at preschool. It’s been the perfect scenario to be able to adjust my schedule with her adjusting schedule! Brianne balances her home and work life out of her home office in Grinnell IA.
